You Already Know Why This Matters.
This work started in 2008 with Poets Lounge, a room built for Black voices to be heard. In 2019, it became BK Yoga Club, the first Black-woman-owned body positive yoga studio in the country. On Juneteenth 2023, it became The Brooklyn Wellness Club.
For 17 years, we've built rooms in Brooklyn where Black women don't have to shrink. BWC has always been more than a studio. It's been proof that wellness spaces can center us, not tolerate us.
Running a physical space alone, while working full time and finishing school, has become unsustainable. So we made a hard, honest choice. We won't be renewing our lease at 704 Dekalb.
Three Things We're Building.
Nonprofit Status
We're filing for 501(c)(3) status, so BWC can access grant funding and stop depending on one person to keep it alive.
Programs Beyond These Walls
Retreats, classes, and programming that travel with us, across New York City and beyond, no single address required.
A Closing Done With Care
Rent and operating costs through our final season, so we can close this chapter fully, not abruptly.
